Daniel Susnjar (D.M.A., M.Mus, B.Mus) is a Western Australian drummer specializing in Afro-Peruvian jazz, who has performed and recorded with music legends including Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, Bobby McFerrin, Dave Grusin, and Steve Miller, to name a few.

Following on from 5 years of study (earning his Doctoral degree from the University of Miami Frost School of Music) and performance in the USA, Caribbean islands and Peru, Daniel returned to Australia and began working on developing innovative ways to combine musical sensibilities from the Afro-Peruvian and Jazz music traditions.

As founder, director, drummer, composer and producer of the Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group, he has released three critically-acclaimed albums (“Su Su Nje” in 2014, “Moth to a Flame” in 2016 and “Spark” in 2018), toured throughout Australia and the USA, and won multiple awards including the 2017 APRA/AMCOS Art Music WA State Award, the 2016 and 2017 WAM awards for Best Jazz Act, the 2018 and 2016 WAM awards for Best Drummer/Percussionist, two wins at the 2015 Australian Jazz Bell Awards (Best Australian Modern Jazz Album “Su Su Nje” and Best Australian Jazz Song of the Year “Forte Pulse Torte”), and the 2015 WAM Jazz Song of the Year award (“Pius Bartosik”).

His ensemble was also invited to perform at the 2017 Percussive Arts Society International Conference in Indianapolis, IN, USA and the 2016 Jazz Education Network Conference in Louisville, KY, USA. Daniel undertook Australian national tours with his ensemble in March/April 2017, April 2016 and December 2016, and was nominated as a finalist in the 2017 APRA Professional Development Awards.

As a founding member of the group Speedball, Daniel performed at the Sydney, Melbourne and Perth International Jazz Festivals – launching their 2017 debut album “We Have Moved” which won the 2018 Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Song of the Year.

Daniel’s solo drum improvisations can be heard on the James Bogle-directed documentary film “Whiteley” (4-time winner at the 2017 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, winner of “Best Music for a Documentary” at the 2017 APRA/AMCOS Screen Music Awards).
